Immunogenetics and the Major Histocompatibility Complex (HLS339)

Module Objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to a thorough understanding, theoretical and practical, of the knowledge, theoretical skills and clinical skills necessary to be proficient in immunogenetics and the human Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), be able to

  • analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
  • perform, adapt and master a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures and demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practise as a Consultant Clinical Scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practise at this level.

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to the:

  • Genetic arrangement of the MHC
  • Causes, extent and significance of genetic variation in HLA and other MHC genes, and its relevance to transplantation and disease
  • WHO nomenclature of HLA and other MHC genes
  • Mechanisms of somatic gene rearrangement to generate T cell receptor and Immunoglobulin diversity.
  • Structure, function, generation and significance of immunoglobulin
  • Structure, function and significance of the T-cell receptor
  • Mechanisms of allo-recognition in transplantation
  • Importance of linkage disequilibrium in the study of HLA and disease and transplant donor selection
  • Emerging knowledge and technologies in immunogenetics
  • Gene structure, expression, polymorphism and function of NK cell receptors and minor histocompatibility antigen systems
  • Immunogenetic significance of loss or downregulation of HLA with regard to haematopoietic and solid tumour development.

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance, adaptation and mastery of the following skills:

  • awareness of the range of tests for the characterisation of HLA genes and other MHC genes relevant to transplantation and
  • interpretation of results and correctly assign types for HLA and other MHC genes and antigens.
